“The rawness of Pinkerton, mixed with the polished pop of Deja Entendu”
– someone probably, 2020
Formed in 2018, Crafting Lies are a punk rock band that dive deep into trying to understand mental health. Songs explore themes of memory loss, overcoming depression, fleeting aspirations and odes to memories that have passed long ago. The lyrics come from front man Ken Taylor, who puts a personal spin on each topic that is true to himself. “The process is cathartic,” says Ken, “and what I love about this project is that as dark as the topics can be – there always seems to be a glimmer of hope. Optimism found in the darkest parts of my brain. It’s an important part of looking at self-love and growth as an individual.”
Taking that lens seems to have payed off as Crafting Lies released their debut 6-song EP, ‘Stork Bite’ in April 2020 – at the top of the Coronavirus pandemic. The EP features songs that range from high octane, pedal-to-the-metal punk found in ‘Carbon Monoxide Dreams’ to the ever-expanding acoustic drawl of ‘Hang It Up’. If there’s one thing Crafting Lies aims to leave with you – is that no two songs are the same.
Stylistically, Crafting Lies have a sound that is their own – incorporating modern singer/songwriter elements with nostalgic punk rock sounds that would feel at home on a Tony Hawk Pro Skater soundtrack. The end result is something that feels relatable and wholesome – a band that understands how difficult life can be, but knowing that there are ways out of the darkness.
